Paediatric First Aid Requirements in the UK: EYFS, Ofsted & Training Explained

Learn about UK Paediatric First Aid requirements for nurseries, childminders, schools, and childcare providers. Understand EYFS and Ofsted obligations and find the accredited training courses you need.

When working with babies and young children, having the right First Aid provision in place is not just good practice — it is a legal and professional responsibility. In the UK, Paediatric First Aid requirements are designed to ensure childcare providers and early years settings can respond quickly and effectively in an emergency.

Whether you run a nursery, childminding business, school, or community group, understanding your obligations around paediatric first aid is essential.

What Is Paediatric First Aid?

Paediatric first aid focuses specifically on treating infants and children. Because children can respond differently to illness, injury, and emergencies compared to adults, specialist training is required.

Paediatric First Aid Courses typically cover:

  • CPR for infants and children
  • Choking
  • Allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
  • Seizures
  • Burns and scalds
  • Head injuries
  • Asthma attacks
  • Bleeding and shock
  • Febrile convulsions
  • Managing unconscious casualties

The aim is to give staff the confidence and knowledge to respond appropriately until emergency services arrive.

Who Needs Paediatric First Aid Training?

In the UK, Paediatric First Aid requirements mainly apply to:

  • Nurseries and pre-schools
  • Childminders
  • Early years settings
  • Schools
  • Holiday clubs
  • Sports and activity providers
  • Anyone caring for children professionally

The exact requirements depend on the setting and the age of the children being cared for.

EYFS Requirements for Early Years Settings

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework sets out the legal requirements for childcare providers in England.

Under EYFS guidance:

  • At least one person with a current full Paediatric First Aid (PFA) certificate must be on the premises and available at all times when children are present.
  • At least one person with a current PFA certificate must accompany children on outings.
  • Newly qualified staff with Level 2 or Level 3 childcare qualifications obtained after 30 June 2016 must hold either a full or emergency paediatric first aid certificate within three months of starting work.

In nursery settings, providers must also ensure adequate First Aid cover based on the number of children and staff present.

Full Paediatric First Aid vs Emergency Paediatric First Aid

There are generally two recognised course types:

Full Paediatric First Aid (12 Hours)

This course is usually completed over two days and meets EYFS requirements for those working in childcare settings.

It covers a wide range of emergency situations involving infants and children.

Emergency Paediatric First Aid (6 Hours)

This shorter course is designed for lower-risk environments or support staff who may not need the full qualification.

However, some settings will still require the full 12-hour qualification to remain compliant.

How Long Does Certification Last?

Paediatric first aid certificates are valid for three years.

Employers and childcare providers should ensure staff renew their qualifications before expiry to remain compliant and maintain confidence in emergency response procedures.

Why Paediatric First Aid Matters

Accidents and medical emergencies can happen anywhere — at nursery, school, sports clubs, or even during routine activities.

Having trained staff on hand can:

  • Save lives
  • Reduce the severity of injuries
  • Improve outcomes for children
  • Reassure parents and carers
  • Help organisations meet legal obligations

Most importantly, it helps create safer environments where children can learn, play, and develop with appropriate protection in place.

Choosing the Right Training Provider

When selecting a paediatric first aid course, organisations should ensure the training is:

  • Fully accredited
  • EYFS compliant
  • Delivered by experienced trainers
  • Practical and scenario-based
  • Suitable for the workplace environment

High-quality training should leave learners feeling confident, capable, and prepared to act in a real emergency.
